Gross, Arthouse, European, Avant Garde, Black Comedy; DVD
When Neville Gorman said 'The birth of Hungarian cinema was the death of art', this is the sort of thing he had in mind.
If you're disturbed by the thought of a man having sex with a pig's carcass, 'Taxidermia' is probably not the movie for you. And believe me, pig sex will be the least of your worries. Taxidermia is an ugly, depraved, grossly confrontational film set out to (hopefully) upset and induce nausea.....utterly brilliant!
Erotic, French, Banned, Arthouse, Black Comedy; 2 x DVD special Directors Cut
A black comedy of sexual manners set around an arranged wedding to occur on the grounds of an elegant chateau, Walerian Borowczyk's controversial masterpiece should be approached with caution but enjoyed with abandon!! Infamous for the final scene where the titular beast ravishes an American heiress, Lucy Broadhurst (Lisbeth Hummel), on the eve of her wedding to a French aristocrat, the graphic scenes of the beast coupling with its human prey sees the daring Borowczyk (Immoral tales) expound on the animalistic nature of human sexuality. Proving too heavy-handed for the censors, the film, which ravishingly revives the beauty and the beast myth, has been banned for thirty years, now finally comes to DVD in a special director's cut. One of the most bizarre and surreal experiences on film, this depraved tale of animal desire is at once riotous and perverse, and remains a masterwork of arthouse erotic cinema.

Passolini, Historic, Erotic, Comedy, Classic (1971); DVD New
"Decameron" is the first of Pasolini's three feature-film adaptations of obscene tales of antiquity, the other two being "The Canterbury Tales" and "The Arabian Nights." The unapologetic choice of ancient, crumbling and dirty locations, coupled with the choice of "real-looking" actors devoid of manufactured graces made this film feel right. 14th century Italy surely was as full of natural humour, even in close proximity to death, as this film makes out. Casual sex in spite of the threat of mortal sin is treated likewise with honesty. A real masterpiece showing humanity in all its various forms.

Gore, Violence, Disturbing, Shocking, Bloodthirsty; DVD Toe Tag Pictures (2007) Used
Penance, the final part in the "August Underground" trilogy is pure unabashed gore! Blood, guts, intestines, nails through the head, disembowelment, cigarette burns, limb sawing and heads being opened like Christmas presents! August Underground's Penance is a shockingly gruesome movie filled with anger, torture, and ejaculation. Every last second of each hideous act is unflinchingly captured by the roving camera, and watching without wincing is not an easy trick. The gruesome effects are top notch and praise must be given to effects man Jerami Cruise.
Rare to find this DVD in Australia.

CHRIS MARKER La Jetée / Sans Soleil (The Criterion Collection); DVD + Book
Criterion Collection/Short Film/Sci-fi/Art/Experimental/Documentary DVD + Book (Used)
One of the most influential; radical science-fiction films ever made and a mind-bending free-form travelogue: LA JETEE and SANS SOLEIL couldn't seem more different, but they're the twin pillars of an unparalleled and uncompromising career in cinema. A filmmaker; poet; novelist; photographer; editor; and now videographer and digital multimedia artist; Chris Marker (A Grin Without a Cat) has been challenging moviegoers; philosophers; and himself for years with his investigations of time; memory; and the rapid advancement of life on this planet. These two films tell a tale of time travel told in still images and a journey to Africa and Japan remain his best-loved and most widely seen. What Chris Marker does in the forty minutes or so of La Jetee is so astonishing that it's astonishing. Using only still frames (save for one shot) to tell his story, the film somehow manages to make us understand the characters, the dilemmas, and the story itself is just so unique and has been ripped off so many times by lesser talents - it's one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made and if you've never seen it you really are missing out. The transfer here is fine and I really recommend first watching it in French with subtitles and then in English, as both narrations have their pluses. Includes 46 page booklet.
