These two films tell a tale of time travel told in still images and a journey to Africa and Japan remain his best-loved and most widely seen. What Chris Marker does in the forty minutes or so of La Jetee is so astonishing that it's astonishing. Using only still frames (save for one shot) to tell his story, the film somehow manages to make us understand the characters, the dilemmas, and the story itself is just so unique and has been ripped off so many times by lesser talents - it's one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made and if you've never seen it you really are missing out. The transfer here is fine and I really recommend first watching it in French with subtitles and then in English, as both narrations have their pluses. Includes 46 page booklet.

Sleazy Italian giallo film that opens with a doctor performing an abortion on a young woman. When she wakes up in the middle of the procedure and dies of a massive coronary, the doctor and assistant take the woman's body to her house, place her in a bathtub full of water and make it look like she drowned in her bathtub of natural causes. The doctor then drives home like nothing wrong has happened, but is attacked and graphically stabbed to death by someone wearing a black leather outfit, complete with motorcycle helmet. The attacker then cuts off the doctor's testicles and leaves them next to his body........and that's just the start.

Before Beat Street, Krush Groove and Breakin there was Wild Style, THE first Hip Hop movie. The film was made by Charlie Ahearn and Fab 5 Freddy and captures the early days of rap music and culture. The story loosely follows a graffiti artist named Zoro who runs around the subway yards in the Bronx at night tagging the trains. That’s really secondary however. The real stars are the music, the art, the mood, and the times Wild Style captures. Right at the start there’s all kinds of real New York graffiti featured both on walls, on subways, and in books. The stuff looks amazing. There’s also a stark contrast between all the color the graffiti brought to the neighborhood compared to the empty buildings and lots and general destruction that had hit the Bronx by this time. Then there’s the music. Even the background music is banging, which was made just for the film by Grandmaster Caz and Chris Stein of Blondie. Some of the artists featured are Busy Bee Starski, Rodney Cee, the Cold Crush Brothers, the Fantastic Freaks, Double Trouble, and Grandmaster Flash. They’re captured in the club, on the stoop, and in one of the most iconic scenes on the basketball court. This was before all the flash and glamor and money hit the rap scene. If you want to hear rap in its most rawest and organic form this is it. Plus there’s pop-locking, break dancing and more.
