TAKASHI NEMOTO: Monster Men Bureiko Lullaby; Paperback
194 pages Controversial/Underground/Japanese/Comic/Manga/Obscene, Paperback - RARE!
If you can't tell from the cover and synopsis, the book is fairly obscene. The humor is sub-scatological. The drawing style is brutally ugly. But it is an incredibly unique and entertaining work that is well worth your time. Nothing escapes Nemoto's scathing, misanthropic satire here, from radiation victims to hyper-masculinity - even the manga industry itself gets torn apart. This is an absolute must for any lover of underground and alternative comics, or outsider art in general. You will have never read anything like it. A seminal work of manga from the mid-1980s, Monster Men Bureiko Lullaby is a Candide-esque tale--if you can picture Candide as a mutated sperm brought to life by radioactivity. Unremittingly explicit, direct, honest and insightful while simultaneously beautiful and grotesque. Due to his unapologetically squalid subject matter, surreal drawing style and pessimistic, satirical stance, Nemoto has long been a controversial figure in Japan.

This time (1983) they have choreographed some of the most bizarre stunt and wire work ever committed to film. Taoism Drunkard is like a Kaiju "Big Battle" on acid. CHRIS MARKER La Jetée / Sans Soleil (The Criterion Collection); DVD + Book
Criterion Collection/Short Film/Sci-fi/Art/Experimental/Documentary DVD + Book (Used)
One of the most influential; radical science-fiction films ever made and a mind-bending free-form travelogue: LA JETEE and SANS SOLEIL couldn't seem more different, but they're the twin pillars of an unparalleled and uncompromising career in cinema. A filmmaker; poet; novelist; photographer; editor; and now videographer and digital multimedia artist; Chris Marker (A Grin Without a Cat) has been challenging moviegoers; philosophers; and himself for years with his investigations of time; memory; and the rapid advancement of life on this planet. These two films tell a tale of time travel told in still images and a journey to Africa and Japan remain his best-loved and most widely seen. What Chris Marker does in the forty minutes or so of La Jetee is so astonishing that it's astonishing. Using only still frames (save for one shot) to tell his story, the film somehow manages to make us understand the characters, the dilemmas, and the story itself is just so unique and has been ripped off so many times by lesser talents - it's one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made and if you've never seen it you really are missing out. The transfer here is fine and I really recommend first watching it in French with subtitles and then in English, as both narrations have their pluses. Includes 46 page booklet.
