Archers of Loaf, Indie Rock, Documentary, Chapel Hill, Live Footage; DVD - New
Indie rock icons the Archers of Loaf reunited in 2011, and during the course of their reunion tour played two legendary concerts at Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC. Combining in-your-face concert footage along with rare interviews of the band, this film by director Gorman Bechard documents those concerts, and captures the excitement and explosive energy of what its like to see this extraordinary band perform live. Filmmaker Gorman Bechard and his production team have artfully captured the Archers' energy and skill on stage, the bouncing, lyrics-shouting revelry the band inspires among their audience, and the enveloping joy of just being in the room amidst it all. The reunited foursome is tight and well rehearsed, with spot-on timing and solid accuracy in their playing. Best of all, they seem to be having a great time once again cranking out these tunes after a decade-plus hiatus, and they seem to get real satisfaction from the fans' enthusiastic reactions (Bachmann confirms that notion in the film). The band's great performance also comes wrapped in some lovely packaging. Simply stated, this is a really well-done concert documentary. Courtesy of Brian Paulson (audio), Gorman Bechard (video), and their team, the film looks and sounds fantastic. The cuts between the six camera angles are skillful and unobtrusive, and the camera placements and movements are nicely used to convey intimacy and intensity. The interviews with the band, interspersed throughout the film, are funny, engaging, and even revealing.

Australian, Melbourne, Post Punk, Little Band Scene, Primitive Calculators, Rare; CD - Ex Used condition
This collection from Chapter Music brings together a selection of tracks from the Antipodean post-punk scene from the likes of The Apartments, Primitive Calculators, Fabulous Marquises as well as other colourfully-named acts, People With Chairs Up Their Noses - who feature Jim White of Dirty Three no less - and Slugfuckers. What's most surprising about this compilation is how heavily electronic elements feature. Take a listen to the eccentric bleeps and bloops of 'The Dumbwaiters' by Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast or the drum machine noodlings of Essendon Airport. On top of that you still get the bedroom guitar abrasion of any self-respecting New Wave scene: there's the skewed jangle of The Moodists' 'Gone Dead', while Voigt/465's 'Voices A Drama' is all Siouxsie & The Banshees hysteria. Best of the bunch is The Apartments' 'Help', plundering the same treasure trove of guitar riffs and classic guitar pop as The Cure. It's worth noting that this compilation has since it's release, paved the way for the more recent retrospectives on Australia's punk and garage scenes. Bloody excellent.
Disturbing, Gore, Horror, Underground, Andy Cobb, Rare; DVD - New
Ivan is a young man who travels a barren wasteland performing shows of self mutilation to small but adoring crowds. He is doing so to attempt to understand the cycle of child abuse he has been a part of. Through flashbacks and halucinations we see his Father murder his mother as well as the psysical abuse Ivan suffered. He must make peace within himself through a sacrifice of blood and honor.
Andy Copp is known for his brutality used in his flicks. Here, his first film, having almost no money he used stock footage of some nasty scene's to shock people from Vietnam. Be advised that it was shot on super 8 and 16mm. There's a lot of gore for the geeks out there but I must warn you due the stock footage that this isn't for the weak of heart or people who are easily offended. Some might say this is an art flick like Begotten (1990) because what you see is sometimes hard to understand. The mutilation man himself is walking around naked full frontal for a lot of the film. Andy Copp went further onto other disturbing flicks. This is the most weird one. It's not for everybody, but gorehounds should love this, but it is hard to sit through.

Shocking, Pinku, Erotic, Torture, Violent, Sexploitation, Disturbing, Surreal; Blu-ray NEW
Legendary Toei director Teruo Ishii tells three stories of moral sickness set during Japan’s prosperous Genroku era in this bloody follow-up to his sexploitation classic Shogun’s Joy of Torture, and the fourth entry in Toei’s ‘abnormal love’ film series. Ishii’s politically incorrect moral lessons paint a trio of tales of tragic heroines caught up in violence, sadomasochism, incest and torture. Ishii’s erotic films grew increasingly shocking, violent and strange, and Orgies of Edo finds him combining period film detail with carnivalesque grotesquerie to create his own particular vision of love and sex. This landmark ‘ero-guro’ film allowed Ishii to experiment with elements that would later show up in his masterpieces Horrors of Malformed Men and Blind Woman’s Curse.
Beat Writers, Allen Ginsberg, Willian S Burroughs, Interview; Hardcover Book (336 pages)
DON’T HIDE THE MADNESS: William S. Burroughs in Conversation with Allen Ginsberg (978-1-941110-70-6, Three Rooms Press, Hardcover, 336 pages, October 16, 2018; $26) has been hailed as a “must-have resource for beat aficianados” by Publishers Weekly and “a beautiful book” by renowned film director Gus Van Sant. The book offers a fly-on-the-wall experience with the driving forces behind two of the 20th century’s literary counterculture masters. The conversation is interspersed with 17 photographs taken by Ginsberg revealing Burroughs’s daily activities from his painting studio to the shooting range. Renowned artist Robert Crumb created a rare new original image for the cover.
In the course of their dialogue in DON’T HIDE THE MADNESS, Burroughs and Ginsberg discuss:
• the force that drives all creative endeavors
• Native American approaches to creativity and imagination
• shamanic ritual and the creative process
• Burroughs’ cut-up approach to literature
• the magical qualities of cats
• and much more, including drugs, guns, punk rock, and lit-world gossip
The conversation, which occurred in conjunction with the release of David Cronenberg’s film adaption of Burroughs’ groundbreaking “cut-up” novel Naked Lunch, reveals intimate personal history and guiding philosophical dialectic in a magnification allowed by the decades of friendship between these two literary giants. DON’T HIDE THE MADNESS presents an important, hitherto-unpublished primary document of the Beat Generation.
