Although Roald Dahl is best known for his children's books, his most famous and sinister adult creation was Tales of the Unexpected. Sometimes gory, but always surprising, the stories all have a twist to entertain and, more often than not, shock the viewer. Adapting works from Dahl himself, this highly acclaimed series ran for an impressive nine years from its first transmission on ITV in 1979. His songwriting style has continued to evolve, and is now more straightforward than ever, yet continues to captivate and connect with the listener in the way only Lou can. Lou Barlow's music- although minimalistic and simple, cannot be easily defined, referenced nor categorized. This CD is yet more proof of that statement, it's amazing how this 2 guitars, a couple drums & Lou's trademark unpretentious lyrics combine into type of garage/folk/rock experience which fits no genre. Lou, using his lyrical ability, invites the listener to a barren yet frighteningly real view of life's pains & trials. This CD surely leaves the listener somewhat exhilerated and certainly wiser. Unfortunately, Wansamsaki's ass-obsessed assistant Wanger botches the procedure causing Waldo's butt to slowly mutate, eventually turning into a Godzilla-sized radioactive rear that goes on a rampage. True story......

This is all part of the brilliance of this Z-grade classic from one of the architects of the genre (along with Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch, etc..). Disaster strikes at the end of the film, but for the two "survivors," it doesn't mean much. In fact, the outcome seems like a pretty good thing to both of them! Along the way they must contend with an asteroid storm, a malfunctioning laser, a beach-ball Alien, and a malfunctioning bomb that enjoys phenomenological discourse and eventually concludes that it is God. Pack me another pipe and let's watch it again.......

What an incredibly super B movie. Acting is bad, plot is paper thin, but... coupled with powerful hallucinatory imagery, some of which is truly disturbing, Winterbeast an absolutely unique viewing experience. The clay-animated monsters remind one of Art Clokey on a bad acid trip; they remain cute and likable as they graphically tear their victims to pieces. One sequence featuring a marvelous actor, Bob Harlow, wearing a clown mask and prancing about a dead body to an ancient recording of a childrens song, is as creepy as anything you'll ever see on film. "Winterbeast' is no-budget filmaking at its finest. If you are into strange,low budget, almost art movie horror, this is the unholy grail.
