HAW! Ivan Brunetti (2005), Paperback
96 pages Fantagraphics (5" x 6"), Used
More offensive than you imagine. Yikes. The ugly underbelly of humanity in all its stinky hairy awfulness reviles right off the page. Pools of human blood, cannibalism, penises of all shapes and sizes and gross out images and jokes about eating feces and at the least misogynist (hating women) if not completely misanthropic (hating humans). Completely politically incorrect. While this book is hilarious, some will find it quite vile. People are doing truly terrible things to each other - be warned. The sub-title of HAW!! is "Horrible, Horrible Cartoons.", which pretty much serves to warn away the easily offended. Brunetti serves up 90-some odd (Very odd...) 1 page gag strips that read like "The Far Side" on crack. No topic is taboo, but if you're open minded, and looking for a LOT of laughs at everyone else's expense, HAW! is not for the young or weak of heart!

TATTOO (Coeditions Quai Branly) 2014; Hardcover
304 pages Hardcover, Used
The practice of tattooing has an extensive primitive history in Asian and African countries, where it had social, religious and mystical roles. In 3000 BC, Ötzi (whose mummy was famously discovered in the 1990s) covered his body in 57 tattoos. In the West, meanwhile, tattoos have long been signifiers of infamy and criminality, before becoming a badge of identity for various urban tribes. Tattoo examines the artistic nature of the practice and celebrates its many cultural expressions from ancient times to the present. Among the topics explored are Native North American tattoos; American tattooing from the Revolution through the 1980s; Russian criminal tattooing; European sideshow culture; Japan's tattoo boom during the Edo period; tattooing in the Marquesas Islands, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand; and newly emerging Latino, Chicano and Chinese tattoo cultures. Alongside accounts of older tattoo practices (presented through rare artifacts, paintings and archival photographs) and contemporary cultural trends in tattooing, the book pays tribute to the pioneers of the modern era, those responsible for its transformation into the mainstream. In addition, it includes two "workshop" sections in which contemporary tattoo artists demonstrate their craft. The artists featured are internationally renowned, and many have created a style that has evolved into its own school. The book closes with a series of photos assessing the most recent currents in modern tattooing.

ANTHROPOPHAGUS (The Grim Reaper) Joe D'Amato1980; DVD
Horror/Shock/Nasty DVD, New
In "Antropophagus", a group of travelers go on a trip to Greece and are joined by a young woman named Julie, who asks them for a ride to an island because she wants to meet some friends. While the group explores the seemingly deserted island, they come across a rotten dead body, which obviously prompts them to rush back to the boat, only to find it adrift. Julie suggests taking shelter at her friends' house, and when they get there, they find the family's blind daughter in an utter state of panic. The teenage girl, named Henerietta, explains to them that her family was killed some days ago by a lunatic. Later, the friends find out that most of the island residents were murdered by the same insane killer, a man named Nikos, who feasts on human flesh and is now out to get them. Immediately banned in many countries after its release, Joe D'Amato's Italian Gore Classic "Antropophagus" of 1980 is a truly disturbing and immensely scary video nasty, and fans of ultra-violent and nasty Horror should not be disappointed. This version, released under the title"The Grim Reaper" is an altogether different cut of the original Anthropophagus film.
FACES OF SNUFF Shane Ryan (2016); DVD
Shockumentary/Underground/Gore DVD, New
The title serves it up without the need for dressing. "Faces of Snuff" couples elements of the death documentary/mondo film (with an obvious nod to the notorious "Faces of Death" series) with the faux snuff/found footage genre that has grown into an epidemic over the last couple of decades (epitomised by the "August Underground" series). No fewer than twenty directors from around the globe contributed to this 136-minute anthology film - and in an attempt to lend credence to the tagline 'Dozens of "snuff" films. Which ones are real?', nobody is credited onscreen. This sense of unknown origins - amplified by the almost complete lack of production credits - is embellished by the lo-fi, spontaneous, homemade quality of the footage, shot on various formats and incorporating onscreen dates that go as far back as the early 80s. Grainy film stock, screen static, sound design reduced to nothing but the whirring of a projector - these elements echo representations of snuff in earlier grindhouse and mainstream films like the controversial "Snuff" (1975) and Paul Schrader's "Hardcore" (1979). This is perhaps most effective at the climax of the film, which features the bulk of a faux snuff film called "Captains Pride Volume 33" - an American short which has been in circulation for years but whose origins remain anonymous.
SPLATTER: Naked Blood (1996); DVD
Gore/Splatter/Japanese/Undergrund DVD, New (RARE)
A young genius develops a new wonder drug called 'Myson' which turns pain into pleasure - the more pain, the more pleasurable it becomes. His mother works at a local hospital and uses three women to conduct experiments on birth control. Unbeknownst to them, the son adds his new wonder drug to the other drugs and the three women become his experiment. One of the women fries her hand, but it feels good and she then cannot stop hurting herself as it gives her more and more pleasure. Things get very messy as she cuts off her nipple and gouges out her eye and eats it!! She eventually kills herself. Another cannot stop piercing herself and cutting herself. It soon becomes apparent that this drug is a nightmare - the victims can't stop butchering themselves. There are several clever subplots but the real outstanding thing about this film is the gore - it's right up there with the best of the 'Guinea Pig' series and quite unlike anything you've seen before. Highly recommended - if you call yourself a hardcore gorehound and are only used to Italian and US splatter, give this one a go - you'll be very surprised. (RARE)

DICKSHARK Bill Zebub (2016); DVD
B-Grade/Cult/Splatter/Sex DVD, New
In this story GIRLS are the ones who say "Don't use your teeth" - (from cover of film)
A romantic couple get more than they expected after the husband's experiments with penis-enlargement cream go awry. Wait, this is not a porn story. Rather, it is an absurd science-fiction movie that features a curious new species, the Dickshark. In some ways this story asks the same questions that Mary Shelly did when she wrote "Frankenstein.".... Dont expect a Hollywood blockbuster.
BADI: (the Turkish E.T) 1983; DVD
Turksploitation/Remake/Cult DVD, New
A Turkish remake of the classic American family film ET, only this one is better. The alien, this time known as "Badi" looks like it was found in the trash then stuffed with a clumsy midget! Watch for the roller coaster scene, it's a real knee slapper! Any fan of the always amazing Turkish style cinema should not miss this mucho retardo masterpiece. Probably as bad a rip as any, but this film is certainly hard to come by, and has definitely not had a digital remaster...... (Cover image may be different from photo)
