OSAKA INTERNATIONAL PIRATE RADIO v/a comp (Exile Osaka); CD and Zine
(1996) Garage Rock/Noise/Punk/Japan/Osaka CD and Mini Zine,Used
Fucking amazing International compilation featuring American and Japanese noise, experimental, garage and lo-fi, junk bands. Assembled back in 1996 by an american expat publishing a zine witnessing the dynamic Osaka underground scene, this CD was sold cheap and serves both purposes of an audio fanzine or an underground radio show captured on CD, most of the bands featured here are pretty diverse, obscure and sometimes difficult to some ears... Contains 25 songs and the 16 page "Exile Osaka" mini zine booklet including band bios and pictures, more info and some excerpts of the Exile Osaka Fanzine.
PUSSY GALORE Right Now (1987); Cassette
Garage Rock/Noise Rock/Punk Blues/Jon Spencer Cassette, Used (Fucking Minty condition! Near new...)
This second LP (Cassette) featured Julie Cafritz (Free Kitten), Neil Hagerty (Royal Trux) and Bob Bert (Sonic Youth) alongside Jon Spencer. This is the one to own if you want the 'full' PG experience, Right Now! is the sound of a deranged psychotic hopped up on reds trying to start a revolution via rock 'n' roll - only he can barely play and realized halfway through that he was what/who he was revolting against. The songs find Pussy Galore at their nihilistic peak - this is Maximum Clang Bang with a production style that fits like an assassin's glove. Much of the record is seemingly recorded using a dizzying mix of rehearsal cassettes with overdubs done in the studio, rough jump cuts between verses and choruses that go from 4-track sludge to 16-track, uh, 'clarity', not to mention the breakneck tempo screeches. Add to that the crazed, casual guitar tunings, the lack of not only bass guitar but of bass frequencies (save those emanating from Bob Bert's industrial junk drum kit) and, sometimes, I listen and think "How the fuck did this ever make it out of the practice room?". But then you add the magic that is rock 'n' roll to the above mess and suddenly what could have been hopelessly art school becomes a sleazy, perverted quagmire of three chord riffs, guitars as raging boners, Jagger lips and Mark E Smith assholisms.
