What Chris Marker does in the forty minutes or so of La Jetee is so astonishing that it’s astonishing. Using only still frames (save for one shot) to tell his story, the film somehow manages to make us understand the characters, the dilemmas, and the story itself is just so unique and has been ripped off so many times by lesser talents – it’s one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made and if you’ve never seen it you really are missing out. The transfer here is fine and I really recommend first watching it in French with subtitles and then in English, as both narrations have their pluses. Includes 46 page booklet.
