THE BIG SOUNDS OF THE DRAGS; LP
LP (1963), Used
This LP is an audio document of Drag racing in the 60’s and it’s the best shit ever……
A 26-minute feast for the ears for fans of early 1960s drag racing, The Big Sounds of the Drags was produced by Jim Economides and featured quarter-mile passes captured by professional recording equipment. Side one of this album begins with a condensed history of drag racing. The titled sections of the LP are introduced by the narrator. For instance, the explanation of “Stock Cars” is followed by the sound of stockers blazing down the strip, interspersed with actual tower announcements from each race. The same treatment was then given to the “Roadsters.” Side two is from the 1962 Winternationals at Pomona, California, with lots of passes and track announcements. Narration is minimal, but “Elimination” is introduced. A showdown between famed racers Jack Chrisman and Tom McEwen is also featured in this section, along with others.
